What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks the starter motor relay when the engine starts. The fault is set if the voltage on the relay signal cable is too low for a certain time. This can be caused by the cable being short-circuited to ground or broken, or by a damaged relay. The engine then cannot be started automatically, only manually.
Possible causes
- The signal cable to the start relay is short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal cable to the start relay
- Damaged starter motor relay
- Break in the power feed to the starter motor
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the starting system are intact
- 2With the ignition on, check that the connectors at the start relay and the control module are secure and free from oxidation and corrosion
- 3Look for chafed or pinched wiring between the control module and the start relay
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable to the start relay is intact and has no contact with ground (the body)
- 5If the wiring is intact and the connectors are good but the fault remains: have a workshop check the start relay, the supply to the starter motor and the control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine does not start
What the fault can affect1
- Only manual start is possible
