What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module sends a control signal to the start relay at engine start and checks that the signal cable does not have too high a voltage. The fault is set if the voltage on the cable is too high for a certain time, which means the signal that controls the starter motor is faulty. The fault can show up as the engine stalling while driving or not starting.
Possible causes
- The signal cable to the start relay is short-circuited to voltage
- The signal cable is short-circuited to ground (fault code ECM-P061611)
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in the connections (fault codes ECM-P061513 and ECM-P061519)
- Open circuit in the signal cable
- Damaged starter motor relay
- Internal fault or damage in the engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the starting system are intact
- 2With the ignition on, check the connectors at the start relay and the control module for looseness, oxidation and contact resistance
- 3With the ignition on and using a multimeter, check that the signal cable to the start relay has no contact with battery voltage
- 4First check whether a more specific fault code for the start relay wiring is stored, and trace that one first
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault codes after the repair, clear them and start the engine to see if they return
- 6If the fault remains after these checks: have a workshop check the start relay and the engine control module

- The starter motor does not turn over when starting
