What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered an internal fault showing that the engine control functions are producing more torque than is permitted. The fault is only set in certain driving conditions. The fault can cause the engine's power and speed to be limited.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
- The cause may lie in the transmission control module (TCM), or be due to faulty CAN communication
- Faulty software in the control module
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in connections
- Air leak in the intake manifold after the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit
- Damaged sensor or component in the engine, for example the mass air flow sensor, throttle unit, air pressure sensor, crankshaft impulse sensor or turbocharger
What you can do
- 1Check whether other fault codes are stored for the engine control and remedy them first, since this code may be a consequence of them
- 2Check the condition of the battery and that the charging system works
- 3Check the connectors and wiring at the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit for looseness and oxidation, and look for leaks in the intake manifold
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault status, start the engine and check whether the fault is still active when the test is complete
- 5If the fault remains after these checks: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment read the engine and transmission control modules
- 6If the fault is permanent: have a workshop replace the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily during acceleration, steady speed or deceleration
- The engine stalls while driving, sometimes or all the time
- Uneven idle and a maximum engine speed that is lower than normal
- The environmental lamp lights, or a warning symbol and a text message appear in the display
What the fault can affect3
- Engine speed and engine output may be limited
- Engine torque is limited, among other ways by fuel shut-off or the throttle position
- Requested torque is limited to a calculated reasonable value
