What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module calculates engine torque from signals from the mass air flow sensor, the throttle unit and the intake air pressure sensor, and compares the measured value with the requested value, which depends on the accelerator pedal position and engine speed. The fault is only checked in certain driving conditions. The code is often a consequence of another diagnostic function that has been close to its fault limit, so the root fault should be remedied first.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake manifold after the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit
- Damaged throttle unit or mass air flow sensor
- Damaged intake manifold air pressure sensor, or a damaged air pressure and air temperature sensor
- Damaged engine or coolant temperature sensor, or damaged flywheel sensor
- Damaged VVT unit or camshaft control valve, or damaged turbocharger components
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check whether other fault codes are stored for the engine control. This code is probably a consequence, so remedy the root fault first and then clear the code
- 2Check that the hoses after the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit are secure and not leaking
- 3Check the connectors at the mass air flow sensor, the throttle unit and the air pressure sensor for looseness and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare measured and requested torque in live data during a test drive with steady throttle and at idle, and see whether they follow each other
- 5If the fault remains after these steps: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensors and components that are part of the torque calculation
Symptoms you may notice3
- Jerky running
- The engine lacks power, especially when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily during acceleration, deceleration or steady speed
What the fault can affect2
- The cruise control switches off while the fault is active
- Engine torque is limited, among other ways by fuel shut-off or the throttle position, and the maximum permitted torque depends on the accelerator pedal position
