What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module reads the signals from the mass air flow sensor, the throttle unit and the air pressure sensor to work out engine torque. The fault is set when the measured torque becomes higher than the requested torque, and this only happens in certain driving conditions. The code often goes together with a root fault in another code, and it can only be cleared once the root fault has been remedied.
Possible causes
- Air leak after the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit in the intake manifold
- Damaged throttle unit or mass air flow sensor
- Damaged air pressure sensor in the intake manifold
- Damaged engine temperature sensor or flywheel sensor
- Damaged VVT unit or camshaft control valve
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check whether other engine control fault codes are stored and remedy them first, since this code may be a consequence
- 2Look for leaks in the intake manifold between the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit
- 3Check the connectors at the mass air flow sensor and the air pressure sensor for looseness and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: look at requested and measured torque in live data with the engine at idle and see whether they follow each other
- 5If the fault remains: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensors and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- Jerky running
- The engine lacks power
- The engine lacks power, particularly when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily during acceleration, deceleration or steady speed
What the fault can affect2
- The cruise control switches off while the fault is active
- Engine torque is limited by fuel shut-off or the throttle position, and the maximum permitted torque depends on the accelerator pedal position
