What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module works out engine torque in two different ways and compares the results, and the fault is set when the two results differ too much from each other. The fault is checked in certain driving conditions, including idling, coasting and high engine load. The code is set first in the brake control module or the central electronics module (BCM/CEM), and it cannot be cleared until the faults there are remedied.
Possible causes
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM), which should be traced first
- CAN-related fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM), or open circuit in the CAN wiring to it
- Contact resistance or oxidation in connectors
- Air leak after the mass air flow sensor or in the intake manifold after the throttle unit
- Damaged throttle unit, mass air flow sensor, air pressure sensor, coolant temperature sensor, impulse sensor or VVT unit
- Damaged turbocharger or turbo control valve, or damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Have a workshop read the BCM fault codes first and then the CEM codes. Do not work on the braking system yourself
- 2Check that the connectors at the throttle unit and the mass air flow sensor are secure and free from oxidation
- 3Look for air leaks in the intake manifold after the mass air flow sensor and the throttle unit
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the engine control fault codes after the other faults are remedied, and clear this code only once it is no longer active
- 5If the fault remains after these checks: have a workshop check the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- Text message in the information display, together with a warning symbol
- The engine lacks power, even when pulling away from standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs jerkily during acceleration, deceleration or steady speed, sometimes or all the time
- The cruise control does not work at all
What the fault can affect3
- Engine torque is limited, among other ways by fuel shut-off or the throttle position
- Traction control stops working
- Vehicle performance is restricted if the fault stays present for a long time
