What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module receives information from the brake control module (BCM) over the CAN network, including about the brake light switch. The fault is set if a message concerning the brake light switch does not arrive or has the wrong content. The code therefore concerns communication between the control modules, and the cause may lie in the brake control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or open circuit in connections
- Fault in the controller area network (CAN)
- Fault in the brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Check that the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is pressed, since the engine control module receives information about the brake light switch
- 3With the ignition on: read the diagnostic status and fault status and check whether the fault is still active
- 4Check the connections in the CAN network for looseness and oxidation
- 5The fault may lie in the brake control module (BCM). Have a workshop trace it, since it controls the braking system, and do not work on it yourself
Symptoms you may notice1
- The cruise control will not engage
What the fault can affect1
- The cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
