What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module communicates with the alternator control module (ACM) over LIN, and the fault is set when the ACM reports that the alternator temperature is above a certain value, or that the alternator is stationary while the engine speed is high. The cause may therefore be a mechanical problem in the drive or blocked air paths to the alternator.

    Possible causes

    • Defective auxiliary drive belt and belt tensioner
    • Damaged freewheel
    • Damaged alternator
    • The air intake and/or air outlet to the alternator is blocked

    What you can do

    1. 1With the ignition off, check the drive belt and belt tensioner for damage
    2. 2Check that the air intake and the air outlet to the alternator are not blocked
    3. 3Check that the alternator freewheel works, so that the rotor shaft can turn freely in one direction but not in the other
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault status after driving to see whether the code returns
    5. 5If the fault returns after driving: have a workshop replace the alternator

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • The "Generator not charging" warning lamp lights when the engine is running
    • The battery discharges
    • The starter motor turns over slowly
    • Noise from the alternator or from the drive belt
    • The engine judders under acceleration

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
