What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module controls the alternator charging over LIN and CAN, and receives fault reports from the alternator control module (ACM). The fault code is set when the ACM reports an electrical fault in the alternator. Causes can be worn carbon brushes in the alternator, a damaged charge regulator in the ACM, or an alternator that has been affected by a charger with too high a charging voltage.
Possible causes
- A battery charger that gave too high a charge voltage was hooked up earlier
- Worn carbon brushes
- Damaged alternator control module (ACM), or its charge regulator
- Damaged alternator
What you can do
- 1Has anyone previously connected a battery charger with too high a charging voltage to the car? If so, the fault code may have been stored because of that
- 2Have a workshop check the alternator's carbon brushes and slip rings, and if they look good, have the workshop decide whether the charge regulator in the ACM is at fault
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault status after the repair and check that the fault is no longer active
- 4If the fault remains after these checks: have a workshop replace the alternator or the ACM
Symptoms you may notice2
- The battery discharges
- The charging warning lights up or behaves abnormally
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
