What does this fault code mean?
The alternator control module (ACM) reports to the engine control module over LIN that the alternator temperature is too high, and the fault is then set. This can be caused by air being unable to pass to and from the alternator, or by a damaged alternator. The electric cooling fan may then run all the time while the engine is running.
Possible causes
- The air intake and/or air outlet to the alternator is blocked
- Damaged alternator
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, look for anything blocking the air intake or the air outlet at the alternator
- 2After a test drive: read the fault status with a diagnostic tool and see whether the code is still present
- 3If the fault returns after driving: have a workshop try a new alternator
Symptoms you may notice1
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time while the engine is running
