What does this fault code mean?
The alternator control module (ACM) reports a mechanical fault to the engine control module over LIN: the alternator is stationary even though the engine speed is above a certain value. The fault therefore means the alternator is not following the drive, for example because the drive belt is slipping or the freewheel is damaged.
Possible causes
- Damaged auxiliary drive belt and belt tensioner
- Damaged freewheel
- Damaged alternator
What you can do
- 1Look at the auxiliary drive belt and belt tensioner and check for damage
- 2Check that the alternator freewheel works: it should drive the rotor shaft in one direction but not in the other
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault status after driving to see whether the code returns
- 4If the fault returns after driving: have a workshop replace the alternator to see whether that helps
Symptoms you may notice5
- The battery discharges
- The starter motor turns over at low speed
- Noise from the alternator
- The engine judders under acceleration
- The charging warning lamp lights or behaves abnormally
