What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module controls the fuel pressure through the fuel pump control module (PEM) using a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal, and the pump runs at the pressure the engine control module requests. The fault code is set when the PWM signal between the engine control module and the fuel pump control module is missing. The code can be caused by the wiring, the fuel pump control module, or a fault logged by the central electronic module (CEM).
Possible causes
- Short circuit to supply voltage in the signal wire
- Damaged fuel pump control module
- A fault logged by the central electronic module (CEM)
- Open circuit in the signal wire
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the connector at the fuel pump control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2With the ignition off and using a multimeter, check that the signal wire has no break, no contact with ground and no contact with supply voltage
- 3Check whether the CEM has stored fault codes for the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay, and trace those first
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fuel pump load in live data with the engine warm at idle and see whether the value looks reasonable
- 5If the fault remains: have a workshop check the fuel pump control module, since it may be faulty
Symptoms you may notice4
- Cranking works, but the engine does not start
- The engine stalls while driving, sometimes or all the time
- The engine does not start, sometimes or all the time
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
