What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors its own memory where the calibration and parameter values are stored (EEPROM). The code is set when the module finds an internal fault in that memory. The check starts when the ignition is switched on, and the fault can only be found while the test is running and the conditions are met. The timing of the symptoms is unclear, and the engine may stall or fail to start.
Possible causes
- Communication interference
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Switch on the ignition and wait a short while before reading the codes, so the module can complete its test
- 2Read the fault code status and check that the fault is no longer active when the test is complete
- 3Check whether other fault codes are stored in the engine control module; these should be traced first
- 4If the code returns after it has been cleared and the car has been road tested, the engine control module needs replacing; have a workshop do this
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine may stall while driving, at an unclear moment or all the time
- The engine does not start
