What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) requests a particular throttle position on bank 1, but the throttle does not reach it. With the engine running, the code is set when the module finds that the requested throttle angle (the desired value) does not match the actual throttle angle (the actual value). The fault may be caused by a sticking throttle, poor contact, wiring to the damper motor, or a damaged throttle unit.
Possible causes
- The throttle is sticking or blocked, for example by oil film or dust
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the terminals linking the ECM to the throttle unit
- Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the wiring to the throttle unit's damper motor
- Short circuit between the wires to the throttle unit's damper motor
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes and first deal with any stored codes for the throttle unit, the throttle position sensor or the engine control module
- 2Switch the ignition off and check that the connectors to the throttle unit and the engine control module are secure, looking for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check that the throttle is not blocked by dirt or oil film and is not sticking, and clean it if needed
- 4If you have diagnostic equipment, compare the desired throttle position (desired value) with the actual one (actual value) in live data while the engine idles
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the damper motor have no open circuit, no short to ground or supply voltage, and no short to each other
- 6If the connectors and wiring are intact but the code returns, have a workshop measure the throttle unit and replace it if needed
Symptoms you may notice3
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- Poorer engine performance
- Uneven idle
What the fault can affect1
- The supply to the throttle unit's damper motor is shut off, and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
