What does this fault code mean?
The ECM sets the alternator charge voltage when the central electronic module (CEM) asks for it, and the alternator control module (ACM) reports faults to the ECM. The code is set when the ACM reports an electrical fault in the alternator. The check runs with the engine running.
Possible causes
- Earlier, a charger that delivered excessive voltage was hooked up to the battery
- Worn carbon brushes
- Damaged alternator control module (ACM), which holds the charge regulator
- Damaged alternator
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check that the connectors and connections in the charging system have no contact resistance or oxidation
- 2If a charger that outputs excessive voltage has been hooked up before, tell the workshop, as the code can be stored because of it
- 3Have a workshop check the alternator's carbon brushes and slip rings, and that the brushes move freely in the regulator housing
- 4If you have diagnostic equipment, read the alternator's charging current in live data with the engine running and see whether it looks reasonable
- 5If the brushes and slip rings are in order but the fault remains, have a workshop try a new alternator control module (ACM)
Symptoms you may notice2
- The battery is dead or has low voltage
- The battery discharges
