What does this fault code mean?
The ECM controls the alternator via the alternator control module (ACM), and that module adjusts the alternator itself. The code is set when the ECM receives word of an electrical fault in the alternator, or when communication with the ACM is faulty. The check runs with the engine running.
Possible causes
- A charger or jump-start unit delivering the wrong charge voltage was hooked up
- Poor contact or oxidation at the connector contacts
- Worn carbon brushes, which sit inside the alternator control module
- Damaged alternator control module (ACM) or damaged alternator
- Damaged auxiliary drive belt and belt tensioner, or a damaged freewheel; see fault code ECM-P065A07
- Open circuit in the signal wire, or too high ambient temperature; see fault codes ECM-P163287 and ECM-P0A3B00
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the connectors and connections in the charging system for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2If a charger that outputs excessive voltage has been hooked up before, tell the workshop, as the code can be stored because of it
- 3Have a workshop inspect the carbon brushes and slip rings, and confirm that the brushes move freely inside the housing
- 4If you have diagnostic equipment, read the alternator's charging current in live data with the engine running and check that it seems reasonable
- 5If the brushes and slip rings are in order but the fault remains, have a workshop try a new alternator control module (ACM)
Symptoms you may notice5
- The battery is dead
- The battery has low voltage
- The charging warning light comes on or behaves abnormally
- A red warning symbol and text message in the display
- The engine does not start, at an unclear moment or all the time
