What does this fault code mean?
On bank 1 the ECM moves the dampers in the variable intake system (VIS) by driving the control valve for their vacuum motor. The code is set when the control signal to that valve is too low or missing.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation at the connector contacts
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Open circuit in the supply wire to the valve
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Supply wire shorted to ground, or an open ground wire
- Faulty control valve or damaged damper
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact and that the relevant functions of the car work, using the buttons, controls or a test drive
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, activate the variable intake control valve and listen for a clicking sound from the valve
- 3With the ignition off, check that the connector to the control valve is secure, free from contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the control valve has no open circuit and is not shorted to ground
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the supply wire to the control valve has no open circuit
- 6If the wiring is intact but the fault remains, have a workshop check the control valve and the damper
Symptoms you may notice3
- The malfunction indicator lamp lights up
- The car performs poorly and lacks power, especially at take-off
- The engine hesitates or surges during acceleration, during deceleration or at steady speed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
