What does this fault code mean?
The control module has detected an open circuit in the circuit to the glow plug for cylinder 5. The glow plug heats the combustion chamber at cold start, and when it does not work the engine becomes harder to start. The fault can only be detected when the ignition is in position II and glowing is activated, and the code is set only once the conditions are met.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire to the glow plug
- Damaged glow plug control unit
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault code, clear it and start the engine when cold. Check whether the fault returns
- 2Check that the fuses for the glow plugs are intact in the owner's manual
- 3Check the connectors and wiring to glow plug 5 for loose, corroded or chafed spots
- 4Activate glowing with a diagnostic tool, if you have one, and check that cylinder 5 is included
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to glow plug 5 has no open circuit, with the connectors disconnected
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the glow plug control unit
Symptoms you may notice3
- Engine hard to start and cranks slowly
- Problem mainly noticed at cold start
- It may be hard to tell when the fault is noticed, or whether it is noticed all the time
