What does this fault code mean?
The control module has detected a signal that is too high in the control circuit for the glow plug for cylinder 5. The glow plug heats the combustion chamber at start, so when its control does not work a cold engine becomes harder to start. The code is general and does not say what type of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Defective glow plug control unit
What you can do
- 1Read and note the fault code, clear it and start the engine when cold to see whether the fault returns
- 2Check the fuses for the glow system in the owner's manual
- 3Check the connector on glow plug 5 and the wiring from it for loose, corroded or chafed spots
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, activate glowing and check whether cylinder 5 is included
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to glow plug 5 is not open, with the connectors disconnected
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the glow plug control unit
Symptoms you may notice3
- Engine hard to start and cranks slowly
- Problem noticed at cold start
- The problem may appear after use, and it is hard to say when it occurs
