What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module sends a control signal to the cooling fan control module to request fan speed. The code is set when that control signal is too low, and the fan then cannot be controlled as intended. The engine may run hotter than normal, and cooling or climate control can be affected.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged cooling fan control module
- Power supply wire short-circuited to ground
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the power supply
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code, then let the engine get warm and see whether the electric cooling fan starts
- 2Check that the fuse for the electric cooling fan is intact in the owner's manual
- 3Look at the connectors and wiring to the cooling fan control module for loose contacts, oxidation and chafing
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with ground (the body), with the connectors disconnected
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the requested fan speed in live data and check whether the fan follows it while the engine runs
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the cooling fan control module and the fan
Symptoms you may notice3
- Electric cooling fan does not work
- Engine may overheat or run hotter than normal
- Temperature control or air conditioning does not work
What the fault can affect2
- Electric cooling fan switched off
- Air conditioning (A/C) switched off
