What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the function of the electric cooling fan and has found a voltage that is too low on the signal wire. The fault lies in the signal wire between the engine control module and the cooling fan control module, or in one of those two control units. The engine may then cool less effectively.
Possible causes
- Signal wire between the engine control module and the cooling fan control module is short-circuited to ground
- Damaged cooling fan control module
- Damaged engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code, and test-drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuse for the electric cooling fan is intact in the owner's manual
- 3Look at the signal wire between the engine control module and the cooling fan control module for chafing, pinch damage and loose contacts, especially where it may have touched the body
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with ground (the body), with the connectors disconnected
- 5With a diagnostic tool you can read the cooling fan status in live data while the engine is running
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the cooling fan control module and the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- Engine may overheat or run hotter than normal
