What does this fault code mean?
The control signal from the engine control module to the cooling fan control module is too low, and the circuit is open according to the code. The fan is controlled steplessly on request from the engine control module, so when the control signal fails the fan cannot follow it. Engine cooling is then affected.
Possible causes
- Loose connection
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged cooling fan control module
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code and test-drive to see whether it returns
- 2Check the connections at the cooling fan control module and on the signal wire: are they secure, clean and free of oxidation?
- 3Look at the wire for open circuit, chafing and pinch damage. A loose connector may be enough to cause the fault
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is intact between the connectors, with the connectors disconnected
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the requested fan speed in live data and check whether the fan follows it while the engine runs
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the cooling fan control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine may overheat or run hotter than normal
- Temperature control or air conditioning does not work
What the fault can affect2
- Electric cooling fan switched off
- Air conditioning (A/C) switched off
