What does this fault code mean?
The control signal from the engine control module to the cooling fan control module is too high, so the fault concerns the level of the signal. The code is general and does not say what type of fault it is. The function of the electric cooling fan may therefore be affected, and cooling and air conditioning can be affected with it.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged cooling fan control module
- Damaged cooling fan
- Loose connection
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code, and check whether it returns once the engine has cooled
- 2Check the fuse for the electric cooling fan in the owner's manual
- 3Look at the signal wire and the connectors at the cooling fan control module for loose contacts, oxidation and chafing, especially where the wire may have touched positive
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with voltage, with the connectors disconnected
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the cooling fan control signal in live data and check whether it follows the request while the ignition is on
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the cooling fan control module and the fan
Symptoms you may notice2
- Electric cooling fan runs all the time, even with the ignition off
- Temperature control or air conditioning does not work
What the fault can affect2
- Electric cooling fan is active
- Air conditioning (A/C) is switched off
