What does this fault code mean?

The control module has found a fault on glow plug 3. The glow plug heats the combustion chamber during a cold start, and when it does not work the engine becomes harder to start. The code is general and does not say what type of fault it is.

Possible causes

Short circuit in the signal wire between the glow plug relay and the glow plug
Damaged glow plug
Voltage from the glow control unit is too low

What you can do

1Read and clear the fault code, and test-drive with a cold engine to see whether it returns
2Check that the fuses for the glow plugs are intact in the owner's manual
3Look at the connector on glow plug 3 and the wire to it for loose contacts, corrosion and chafing
4With a diagnostic tool you can activate glowing and check in live data whether cylinder 3 is included
5Use a multimeter to check that the wire to glow plug 3 has no contact with ground (the body), with the connectors disconnected
6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the glow plug and the glow control unit
