What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module watches what the RPM sensor sends. If the signal is missing, the control module treats this as a fault and the code is set. The fault may lie in the wiring, the connectors or the sensor itself.

    Possible causes

    • Open circuit in the signal or ground lead
    • Signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
    • Contact resistance in the connections
    • Damaged engine speed sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and clear the fault code, and start the engine to see whether it returns
    2. 2Look at the connectors at the speed sensor and the wiring for loose contacts, oxidation and chafing
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal and ground leads are not broken, with the connectors disconnected
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with ground or voltage, with the connectors disconnected
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the speed sensor. Damage to the flywheel or carrier plate can also cause the fault

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Starter spins, yet the engine will not start
    • Engine stops

    What the fault can affect1

    • If the camshaft sensor has been adapted, the control module uses its signal instead

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
