What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the voltage on the signal wire to the starter relay. The code is set when the voltage lies below a set threshold for a set time, which is treated as a fault. The fault is checked when the engine is started.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire shorted to earth
    • Break in the signal wire
    • Damaged starter relay
    • Open circuit in the supply feeding the starter motor
    • Damaged control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
    2. 2Check that the starter relay is intact and firmly fitted in its mounting
    3. 3Check that the connectors at the starter relay and in the wiring are firmly seated and free from play, oxidation and contact resistance
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the starter relay has no break and is not shorted to earth (the body)
    5. 5Check that the supply wire to the starter motor has no break. If the fault remains, have a workshop investigate the control module

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine does not start, either always or on some occasions

    What the fault can affect1

    • Only manual starting is possible

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
