What does this fault code mean?

The fault concerns a short to earth on the signal wire to the starter relay. The ECM watches the voltage on this wire and sets the code when it stays below a set threshold for a set time. The fault is checked when the engine is started.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire shorted to earth
    • Chafing, looseness or open circuit in the signal wire
    • Damaged starter relay
    • Open circuit in the feed to the starter motor
    • Damaged control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
    2. 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the relay has no contact with earth (the body)
    3. 3Check that the wire has not rubbed against the body or an edge where it passes, and that the connectors are firmly seated
    4. 4Check that the starter relay is intact and firmly fitted in its mounting
    5. 5Read off the fault code, erase it and start the engine to see whether it returns
    6. 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop investigate the engine control module

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine does not start, and this may happen always or only sometimes

    What the fault can affect1

    • Only manual starting is possible

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
