What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns the gear lever X position sensor. The engine control module (ECM) continuously receives the gear selector position from the transmission control module (TCM) over the CAN network. The code is set when that message is missing or wrong, for example when the counter in the message is incorrect or is not updated.
Possible causes
- Fault on the CAN network
- The root cause is in the transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 2Read the fault codes in the transmission control module (TCM) first, as the root cause is there
- 3Read the fault codes in the engine control module and check for other CAN-related codes, as the fault may originate in the CAN network
- 4Try moving the gear selector through all positions and check that the car responds as normal
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the gear selector position changes as you move the selector
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop investigate the CAN network and the transmission control module (TCM)
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
