What does this fault code mean?
The code means that the engine control module (ECM) does not receive a valid signal for the park and neutral gear positions over CAN. The signal may be missing, wrong or of too poor quality. The fault is a knock-on from the transmission control module (TCM), and it is checked with the ignition on.
Possible causes
- Faulty CAN communication
- The root cause is in the transmission control module (TCM)
- Break in one of the CAN network wires
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- One of the CAN network wires is shorted to earth or to voltage
- The CAN network wires are shorted to each other
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the transmission control module (TCM) and remedy them first, as this code is set after the fault there
- 2Erase this fault code only after the TCM fault has been remedied and its fault code erased
- 3Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 4Check that the connectors on the CAN network are firmly seated and free from oxidation and contact resistance
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break and are not shorted to earth, voltage or each other
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the CAN network
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start and the starter does not crank it, either always or on some occasions
- A clicking sound, or no sound at all, is heard when starting is attempted
- A message and a warning symbol are shown in the display
