What does this fault code mean?

The code means that the direct wire from the gear selector says starting is allowed, while the CAN signal from the transmission control module (TCM) says the opposite. The engine control module (ECM) uses the selector positions to decide whether engine start is allowed, and the fault is checked with the ignition on.

    Possible causes

    • The root cause is in the transmission control module (TCM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Begin in the transmission control module (TCM) by reading off and remedying its fault codes
    2. 2Erase this code last, once the root cause in the TCM has been remedied and its fault code erased
    3. 3Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire from the gear selector has no break and no contact with earth or voltage
    5. 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop investigate the transmission control module (TCM)

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • The engine is hard to start and cranks slowly, either always or on some occasions
    • The engine does not start, either always or on some occasions

    What the fault can affect1

    • The ECM uses the signal received over CAN instead

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
