What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns neutral position sensor A, which measures how far the input shaft to the gearbox is turned by the gear lever. The sensor has a main sensor and a backup sensor, and the fault is set when the main sensor's reading is too high or too low. Although the code is named open, it applies to a value that is too high or too low.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Short to voltage in the connector
- Damaged neutral position sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 2Check that the connector at the neutral position sensor is undamaged, firmly seated and has not been shorted to voltage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the neutral position sensor has no contact with the battery positive
- 4Where possible, try automatic stop-start with the buttons and controls to see whether it works
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the neutral position sensor value follows the gear lever position as you move it between the positions
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop investigate the neutral position sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- Automatic engine stop-start does not work while driving
- Automatic engine stop-start does not work at idle
What the fault can affect1
- The automatic engine stop-start function is switched off
