What does this fault code mean?
Neutral position sensor A measures the angle through which the gear lever turns the input shaft to the gearbox. During a gear change its voltage should change in a set pattern, but here it does not change at all or varies only within a small range. There is a main sensor and a backup redundancy sensor, and the fault concerns the main sensor's signal.
Possible causes
- Loose contact or oxidation in the connector
- Short circuit or break in the wiring to the sensor
- Sensor incorrectly fitted to the gearbox
- Damaged link arm that the sensor is attached to
- Magnet damaged or in the wrong position
- Damaged neutral position sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 2Check that the connector at the neutral position sensor is firmly seated and free from looseness and oxidation
- 3Check that the link arm and sensor are firmly fixed and undamaged, and that the sensor is correctly positioned on the gearbox
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the sensor has no break and is not shorted to earth
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the sensor value changes clearly as the gear lever is moved between positions on a test drive
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor and its magnet
Symptoms you may notice3
- Automatic engine stop-start does not work while driving
- Automatic engine stop-start does not work at idle
- Starting and auto-start do not work
What the fault can affect1
- The automatic engine stop-start function is switched off
