What does this fault code mean?
The main sensor of neutral position sensor A gives a signal that is missing or too low, which points to a signal fault to earth. The sensor has a redundancy sensor as a backup. The fault is checked with the engine running and the ignition on.
Possible causes
- Loose contact or oxidation in the connector
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Break in the signal wire
- Damaged neutral position sensor
- Short to earth in the connector
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the sensor has no break and no contact with earth (the body)
- 3Check that the connector at the sensor is firmly seated and free from oxidation and looseness
- 4Where possible, try automatic stop-start with the buttons and controls to see whether the function is affected
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the sensor value changes as the gear lever is moved, instead of staying at a low level
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop investigate the neutral position sensor
