What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module adapts to the gear lever positions while driving, using the voltage levels that the neutral position sensor gives for high and low gear. The code is set when these levels vary too much for the adaptation to be carried out. It therefore indicates that the sensor signal is uneven or erratic.

    Possible causes

    • Neutral position sensor adaptation not reset after work on the gearbox
    • Loose contact or oxidation in the connector
    • Short circuit or break in the wiring to the sensor
    • Sensor incorrectly fitted to the gearbox
    • Damaged link arm that the sensor is attached to
    • Damaged neutral position sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Has any work recently been done on the gearbox? If so, the adaptation may need resetting, which is a job for a workshop
    2. 2Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
    3. 3Check that the connector at the neutral position sensor is firmly seated and free from looseness and oxidation
    4. 4Check that the link arm and sensor are firmly fixed and undamaged
    5. 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the sensor has no break and is not shorted to earth
    6. 6If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the sensor value changes smoothly as the gear lever is moved, with no jumps between positions

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • Automatic engine stop-start does not work while driving
    • Automatic engine stop-start does not work at idle
    • Starting and auto-start do not work

    What the fault can affect1

    • The automatic engine stop-start function is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
