What does this fault code mean?
The two signals from the neutral position sensors, A and B, do not agree with each other. The engine control module compares them while automatic stop-start is active, and the fault is checked with the ignition on and the engine running.
Possible causes
- Loose contact or oxidation in the connector
- Signal wire shorted to earth, or with a break in it
- Short to earth in the connector
- Damaged neutral position sensor
- Magnet damaged or in the wrong position
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 2Check that the connectors at the neutral position sensors are firmly seated and free from looseness and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wires to the sensors have no break and are not shorted to earth (the body)
- 4Check that the sensors are correctly fitted to the gearbox and that the magnet is not damaged or displaced
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the two sensor values change together as the gear lever is moved
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop investigate the sensors and their wiring
Symptoms you may notice3
- Automatic engine stop-start does not work while driving
- Automatic engine stop-start does not work at idle
- Starting and auto-start do not work
What the fault can affect1
- The automatic engine stop-start function is switched off
