System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), V70 (2008–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine coolant temperature sensor gives a signal that the engine control module judges to be wrong, and the code is then set. The fault can be checked both with the ignition on and with the engine running. The code may be set wrongly if an EGR test is run before the engine has reached normal working temperature.
Possible causes
- Break in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are shown in the instruction manual or on the fuse list
- 2Check that the connector at the engine coolant temperature sensor is firmly seated and free from looseness, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the sensor has no break and is not shorted to earth or to positive
- 4If the code was set straight after an EGR test with a cold engine, drive the car until the engine is warm and read the code again
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the engine coolant temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
