What does this fault code mean?
The ECM checks whether the front oxygen sensor (bank 1) switches between lean and rich at a reasonable rate. The code is set when the signal changes too seldom or not at all, meaning the sensor wrongly shows a lean mixture. Because the check only runs under certain driving conditions, a test drive may be needed before the fault can be judged.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake pipe
- Damaged front oxygen sensor (bank 1)
- Oxygen sensor is incorrectly fitted
- Oxygen sensor is damaged
What you can do
- 1Look for air leaks in the intake pipe, for example at hoses and connections
- 2Check that the oxygen sensor is correctly fitted and that its connector is firmly seated
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the oxygen sensor signal in live data during a test drive and see whether it switches between rich and lean
- 4If you find no fault in the intake, sensor or connector: have a workshop replace the oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator (MIL) lamp is lit
