What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously monitors the voltage of the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1, which is the cylinder row at the front with cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7. The code is set when the voltage falls outside the range the ECM accepts, or when the sensor wrongly shows a lean mixture.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Broken signal wire
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor on bank 1
- Air leak in the intake pipe
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: start the engine, let it idle for a while, then read the fault status. Malfunction found means the fault is present now
- 2Do not use rust solvent spray or grease in the oxygen sensor connector, and check that it is firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 3Inspect the signal wire for chafing, and use a multimeter to check that it is unbroken and has no contact with ground
- 4Look for air leaks in the intake pipe, for example at hoses and connections
- 5If you find nothing above: try a new rear oxygen sensor, or have a workshop replace it
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator (MIL) lamp is lit
What the fault can affect1
- Control of the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
