What does this fault code mean?
The ECM watches the voltage from the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1, the cylinder row at the front. The code is set when the sensor reads rich incorrectly, or when the voltage falls outside the range the ECM accepts.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Damaged injectors, or injectors of the wrong type
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor on bank 1
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool: with the engine idling, read the fault status once the diagnosis has finished. Malfunction found means the fault is present now
- 2Do not use rust solvent spray or grease in the oxygen sensor connector, and make sure the connector is firmly seated
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with battery positive (voltage)
- 4Check the injectors for visible damage and leaks
- 5If the fault remains after these checks: have a workshop replace the rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator (MIL) lamp is lit
What the fault can affect1
- Control of the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
