What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the signals from the camshaft sensor and the pulse sensor to know where the crankshaft is. The code is set when the sync signal is missing, that is when the sensor does not see the gap on the crankshaft pulse wheel where teeth are missing. The code gives no further fault type.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Pulse sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged pulse sensor
- Worn teeth on the timing belt
- Damaged camshaft
What you can do
- 1Check that the connectors to the camshaft sensor and the pulse sensor are secure and free from corrosion.
- 2With a diagnostic tool you can read the DTC counter and the freeze frame data. They show how often the fault has occurred and under what conditions.
- 3Check that the fault does not return after you have cleared the code and test-driven the car.
- 4Have a workshop check that the pulse sensor is correctly fitted and undamaged, and that the timing belt teeth are not worn.
- 5If none of this shows a cause, have a workshop check the camshaft.
Symptoms you may notice4
- The Check engine (malfunction) lamp comes on
- Poor performance, the car lacks power, especially when pulling away from a standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly during acceleration and deceleration
- The engine does not start, and when the fault shows is unclear
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
