Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the EGR valve and, when needed, adapts it to check that the values are reasonable. The code is set when the signal from the position sensor is incorrect or unreasonable. The causes are a valve stuck in the open position or sticking, a contact problem, or a damaged sensor or EGR valve.
Possible causes
- The EGR valve has jammed in the open position
- The EGR valve sticks, for example due to dirt or soot
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged position sensor
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact and that the connectors to the position sensor are secure and free from oxide.
- 2Look for dirt and soot around the EGR valve, as it can stick and cause the fault.
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the EGR valve position value in live data while the engine idles.
- 4Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the position sensor and the EGR valve, and replace whichever is damaged.
- 5After the work, clear the code and drive the car for a while to see whether it returns.
Symptoms you may notice1
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
What the fault can affect1
- No EGR control takes place
