What does this fault code mean?
The pulse sensor gives the engine control module (ECM) information about crankshaft rotation and how many teeth pass the sensor. The module uses the signal to calculate engine speed. The code is set when the ECM receives an incorrect number of crankshaft teeth per revolution, or when the sensor does not see the gap where teeth are missing on the crankshaft.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Pulse sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged pulse sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the pulse sensor connector
- Damage to the flywheel or carrier plate
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check the pulse sensor connector and connections. They should be secure and free from oxide and corrosion.
- 3Check that the pulse sensor is fitted firmly and in the correct position.
- 4Look for high-current cables, such as the starter motor cable, that lie too close to the pulse sensor or its wiring and can disturb the signal.
- 5Have a workshop check the flywheel reference holes, as damage there can also cause the fault.
Symptoms you may notice5
- The Check engine (malfunction) lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- Poor performance, the car lacks power, especially when pulling away from a standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly, at unclear times
- The engine does not start, and when the fault shows is unclear
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The maximum engine speed is limited
