What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the EGR control, that is the exhaust gas recirculation. The code is set when the module registers a fault in the EGR valve or its wiring that gives incorrect EGR control. The fault can come from poor contact, a short or open circuit in the wiring, a sticking EGR valve, or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation at the EGR valve connectors
- Short circuit to supply voltage in the wiring to the EGR valve
- Short circuit to earth in the wiring to the EGR valve
- Open circuit in the wiring to the EGR valve
- The EGR valve seizes or has jammed
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. The locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check the connectors to the EGR valve. They should be secure and free from oxide.
- 3Look for broken, chafed or pinched wires to the EGR valve. They may have shorted to earth or supply voltage.
- 4Look for soot and dirt around the EGR valve, as it can seize or jam.
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the EGR valve and its wiring, and replace the valve if it is damaged.
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
