What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the position sensor of the EGR valve and sets the code when the valve does not move to the position the module has requested. The causes are a sticking or damaged EGR valve, poor contact, dirt or soot, or an open or short circuit in the wiring to the valve. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) control is switched off.

    Possible causes

    • Sticking EGR valve
    • Damaged EGR valve
    • Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation at the EGR valve connectors
    • The EGR valve seizes from dirt or soot
    • Open circuit in the wiring to the EGR valve
    • Wiring to the EGR valve shorted to earth or supply voltage

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact.
    2. 2Go through the connectors to the EGR valve. They should be secure and free from oxide.
    3. 3Look for breaks in the wiring to the EGR valve, and for chafing that may have shorted it to earth or supply voltage.
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, you can activate the EGR valve and check that it does not bind.
    5. 5Have a workshop measure at the connector to the engine control module, as this needs measurements.

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The Check engine (malfunction) lamp comes on or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect2

    • EGR control is switched off
    • Engine output is limited

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
