What does this fault code mean?
The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it may not be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the function of the EGR valve and sets the code when the signal from the EGR valve position sensor is incorrect or unreasonable. The causes can be loose contact, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections, or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Loose connections
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact.
- 2Go through the connectors to the position sensor at the EGR valve and check that they are secure and not corroded.
- 3Since the fault comes and goes, note when it appears and whether it is linked to a particular driving style or weather.
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the EGR valve position value in live data with the engine running and see whether the value jumps.
- 5If the connectors are in order, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the EGR valve.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The Check engine (malfunction) lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- Text message and warning symbol in the display
What the fault can affect1
- No EGR control takes place
