Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the electric cooling fan all the time. The code is set when the fan's own control module signals an internal fault. The causes are poor contact or oxidation in the connections, or an open or short circuit to earth in the signal wire.
Possible causes
- Poor contact, contact resistance or oxidation at the connectors
- Open circuit or short circuit to earth in the signal wire
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the electric cooling fan are intact. The locations are in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check the connectors at the electric cooling fan and at its control module. They should be secure and free from oxide.
- 3Look for broken or chafed signal wires to the electric cooling fan.
- 4If the fan runs all the time, have a workshop check it straight away, as it loads the battery.
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the electric cooling fan control module, since it reports an internal fault.
Symptoms you may notice2
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time, even when the ignition is off
- The electric cooling fan does not work
