What does this fault code mean?
This code relates to the electric cooling fan and is event controlled, so it does not mean a fault in the engine control module. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the cooling system and sets the code when the fan is blocked or overheated, when its supply voltage is too low, or when the temperature in the fan control module has exceeded a set value. The code clears by itself when the conditions no longer apply and does not need to be erased.
Possible causes
- No part is faulty: the code can be set without any repair being needed
- Excessively high temperature in the engine bay
- Short to voltage on the wire carrying the fan signal, from the cooling fan control unit to the fan motor
- Short to ground on the same signal wire, between the control unit and the fan motor
- Damaged fan motor
- Damaged cooling fan control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the cooling fan are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check that the radiator grille and the area around the cooling fan are not blocked by leaves, debris or dirt.
- 3Check the connectors at the cooling fan and the fan control module for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 4Check the wiring to the fan for chafing. Use a multimeter to check for a break, or a short to ground or voltage.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the cooling fan and listen for it starting and running evenly.
- 6If the code returns even though the connectors and wiring are in order, have a workshop check the fan control module and the fan motor.

- The engine runs hot or overheats
- The air conditioning or climate control does not work
- The coolant temperature gauge shows a value that is too high

- The cooling fan is active
- The fan is switched off until the temperature has dropped below a set value
