What does this fault code mean?
The cooling fan code is event controlled, which means it is an information code and does not show a fault in the engine control module. The fan control module detects faults itself and sends them to the engine control module (ECM) over the signal wire. The fault may concern the fan motor, the output stage in the fan control module or another internal fault there. The engine control module monitors the function of the fan all the time. The code clears when the conditions no longer apply and does not need to be erased.
Possible causes
- No part is faulty: the code can be set without any repair being needed
- With fault code ECM-P048098: excessively high temperature in the engine bay, a short to voltage or ground, a damaged fan motor or a damaged fan control module
- With fault code ECM-P048097: a blocked or sticking fan or fan motor, contact resistance or corrosion, or an open circuit in the signal wire
- With fault code ECM-P048068: jump-starting or fast-charging the battery with too high a voltage, a fault in the charging system, or wires shorted to ground or voltage
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the cooling fan are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check that the fan is not blocked by leaves, debris or dirt, and that it turns freely by hand when the engine is off and has cooled down.
- 3Check the connectors between the fan control module and the fan motor for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 4Check the wiring to the fan for chafing. Use a multimeter to check for a break, or a short to ground or voltage.
- 5Check the battery charge, and whether jump-start cables or a fast charger have been used recently.
- 6If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the cooling fan and listen for it starting and running evenly. Have a workshop check the fan control module if it does not.
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine runs hot or overheats
- The air conditioning or climate control does not work
- The coolant temperature gauge shows a value that is too high
What the fault can affect1
- The cooling fan is active
