What does this fault code mean?

The cooling fan has become too hot. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the function of the fan and sets the code when the cooling fan overheats. The fault is checked while the engine is running, and also during the time the cooling fan keeps running after the engine has been switched off. The code concerns overtemperature in the component and may be caused by the driver circuit in the engine control module overheating, or by a damaged fan control module.

    Possible causes

    • A driver stage in the engine control module overheats because the resistance towards the battery is too low, though the circuit is not fully short-circuited
    • Damaged cooling fan control module

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the cooling fan keeps running for a while after the engine is switched off, which is normal.
    2. 2Check that the fuses for the cooling fan are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
    3. 3Check the connectors at the fan control module for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the live data for the cooling fan when the engine is warm and check that the fan runs as the temperature rises.
    5. 5If the code returns even though the connectors are in order, have a workshop check the fan control module and the engine control module driver circuit.

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine runs hot or overheats

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
