System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsV70 (2008–), XC60 (2009–), XC70 (2008–), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the cooling fan with a PWM signal through the fan control module, and can detect faults in the signal wire between them. The code concerns the signal wire, which is shorted to ground. The fault is recorded in the engine control module. There are related codes for the same circuit, ECM-P147412 and ECM-P147413, which may appear instead depending on the fault.
Possible causes
- The signal wire between the engine control module (ECM) and the fan control module is shorted to ground
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover.
- 2Check the connectors between the engine control module and the fan control module for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion.
- 3With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire between them has no contact with ground (the body).
- 4Check that the wire is not chafed or pinched, especially where it runs close to the body.
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the cooling fan and check that it starts when you send the command.
- 6If the code returns, have a workshop check the fan control module and the engine control module.
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine runs hot or overheats
What the fault can affect1
- The cooling fan is active
